—— What did you think about having one of the leading recording engineers agreeing to do a remote recording session?
JiLL-Decoy: We were extremely happy to have an engineer who understands live performances, to step outside the recording studio and come work with us. Ambience, little bit of tension and intimacy of the performancers and the audience are unique to live performances. We were always hoping to have more opportunities to have these things recorded, and that’s exactly when we heard of this great news – we were very lucky.
—— The quality of the recording.
JiLL-Decoy: We think the intimate feeling of a live performance was captured very well. During the mix check, all those who actually heard the performance came back, so we were chatting away, like “this is where it starts to heat up,” and “this is the good part!” Everyone got surprisingly really excited during the session and it was a lot of fun.
Mr. Yamada has a lot of knowledge about drums and other instruments, so everything in the mix was exactly what we were looking for. We had no stress from the performers’ side. We felt that the music wasn’t amended but more conditioned and polished and that’s a great feeling to artists.
—— It was multi-tracked this time. What are the benefits of multi-track recording?
JiLL-Decoy: In order for listeners to enjoy the same feel we have in the live venue through speakers, headphones and earphones, there should be some kind of adjustment done to the tracks using these speakers. It is ideal for the multi-tracked recordings to be mixed through speakers that weren’t used in the live venue.
Because we didn’t videotape the performance this time, simply playing back through speakers isn’t enough to resemble the true atmosphere of the venue. The room where the listener is listening to the recording should become the live venue – and so that is why a different set of speakers needs to be used for the mix. We believe there are many ways of recording in stereo, but I think the multi-track recording worked really well this time.
—— Lots of time and money are used for studio recordings. What do you think about achieving high quality recording in one week using limited gear?
JiLL-Decoy: After listening to the end product of this project, we see so much potential in ways of enjoying music. If you compare a studio recording to a fantasy film, we would say live recording is a documentary film. It is really exciting thinking about more of these documentary music reaching the homes of listeners. JiLL-Decoy members all like jazz, and we feel there is a lot interesting documentary feel captured in jazz recordings. We truly hope there will be more chance to have recordings done like that.

—— There are many people who listen to high quality audio on their computers. How do you feel about offering listeners high quality audio over the internet?
JiLL-Decoy: We like the idea of having different options to enjoying music. We listen to high-quality audio on computers all the time and feel it is a perfect way for live recordings. High-quality audio can playback the ambience and vibe in the venue. It also captures the small performance nuances. It gives us more pressure and responsibility to performing well as well.
—— Do you have any insights or prospective from the whole process you experienced?
JiLL-Decoy: High quality live recording – it may seem difficult to prepare audio equipments to play it back. But enjoying high quality audio and live recordings at home has become greatly accessible through on-demand. Being able to listen to great audio – I think and hope the opportunity will keep growing.
